Christmas News Letter

Alberta Centennial Salute

The Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks and Wildlife Foundation have named Lawrence Duperron of the Derrick Boxing Club to the Top100 Albertan List.  Lawrence’s countless hours of work with Alberta’s youth has not gone unnoticed.  Mr. Duperron will receive his award at a banquet in Red Deer on Dec. 8th and it will be displayed in a special section of the Alberta Sport Hall of Fame. Honorary member of Boxing Alberta, Ron Hayer, of Edmonton, was also named, along with long time Alberta amateur boxing great Max Gibb from Lethbridge.

England VS Alberta

Bolton Lads & Girls Club (just outside of Manchester) arrived in Edmonton October 6th for 2 boxing shows.  Ten boxers and coach John Hart competed at the Cougar/Avenue Prospects Dinner Show on Oct. 7th and Boxing Alberta’s Doug’s Place Challenge Cup on Oct 11th. Both cards were excellent competition for our Alberta athletes and the capacity crowds at both events were witness to some very high caliber amateur boxing. Boxing Alberta has been invited to a return competition to Bolton, England and Glasgow, Scotland in early May 2006.  This would be a single meet in Glasgow and a tournament in Bolton.

Our Traveling Athletes

Arash Usmanee (West Pembina)and Gino Nardari  (Medicine Hat) have been very busy young men.  Arash returned from a July multi-nations tournament in Manchester, Eng. with 2 victories and the gold medal while Gino was in tough and lost his 1st bout.  Arash also represented Canada at 3 dual meets; against the English in Halifax, NS and the Irish in London, ON and St. Catherine’s, ON.  Arash won both these competitions and was pick best boxer of both meets. Results from the World Championships in China , both Gino and Arash lost their 1st competitions.  At the RingSide tournament in Kansas City, Missouri, Arash (West Pembina) , Sleman Usmanee (Red Deer)and Angus McNeely (Calgary)all won their 3 bouts and returned home with the Championship Belts Jennifer Walker (Calgary) won 2 bouts and lost in the final.  Winning 1 bout were Gino Nardari (Medicine Hat), Robert Sherman (Impact) and Yanks Trottier (Lethbridge).  A little side note, David Moreau (Edmonton official and Boxing Alberta, Board of Director), was picked as the best official of the RingSide Tournament.  Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches and officials who traveled this summer.

Western Canadian Championships

Manitoba hosted this year’s competition in Winnipeg, December 3 & 4.  Athletes from the 4 western provinces and the Yukon were in attendance.  Alberta boxers bringing home Gold Medals were Matt Dumais and Robert Sherman from Impact, Sleman Usmanee, Mark Habana, Mellard Rahime, Cam O’Connell and Robert Montgomery all from Red Deer and Cody Fahlman of the Medicine Hat Boxing Club.

Holy Boxing Match

One Day the Devil challenged the Lord to a boxing match. Smiling the Lord proclaimed, "You don't have a chance, I have won medals in every weight class and all the greatest boxers are up here for me to train with".

"Yes", snickered the Devil, "but I have all the referees and judges."
